Happy holidays!! We hope you're enjoying the magic and joy of this special season. Our newsletter is going to be a little different this month! We're taking a break from any talk of paper products (I know, gasp!) to share more about our charitable efforts.
For RELYCO, community service is at the heart of our business. As we close out this year, which has been difficult for so many, we wanted to tell you about a couple of things we're involved in right now. We hope this newsletter inspires you to find ways to help and support members of your own communities. 'Tis the season for giving!
Thanks 4 Giving Charity
In November, Mike Steinberg (RELYCO's founder) and Jeff Roemer announced the formation of a new non-profit organization: Thanks 4 Giving Charity.
Mike and Jeff, who owns local restaurants Blue Latitudes and Roost, created and co-hosted a Thanksgiving dinner celebration together in 2009. The event has continued every year, and it has grown with the help of volunteers and other local businesses. This year, Thanks 4 Giving Charity officially led the 13th annual Thanksgiving Celebration event on Wednesday, November 24th.
The Thanksgiving Celebration provides a Thanksgiving meal to local individuals and families who face food insecurity and other challenges. Last year, due to the pandemic, the event pivoted from an in-person dining experience to a delivery service. This expanded the reach from approximately 350 people to over 600.
This year, dozens of volunteers safely packaged and delivered close to 800 hot meals to Strafford County Homeless Shelter, The Teen Center, My Friend’s Place, Dover Housing Authority and several other local non-profit organizations.
The mission of Thanks 4 Giving Charity is to contribute to the well-being of the greater Seacoast region by celebrating the spirit of community, connecting people and inspiring community-led change.
Each December since 2003, RELYCO gives gifts to local children whose families need some help during the holidays. The program is part of our Community Service Program. It is led by RELYCO's Service Team members, with the help of our neighbors and friends at DF Richard. Last year we had to change up the structure of the program due to the pandemic, but we still had a wonderful time and supported 111 children from 47 families.
This year, Joni van Gelder reports that we're on track to support between 100-130 kids. We're keeping what we loved about last year (online shopping to reduce contact) and bringing back what we missed the most (wrapping in-person). Sure, it'll look a little different - we'll be distancing and masking up - but we're excited to bring back our wrapping tradition!
